Understand the science — not just the settings
Go beyond simply knowing that red and near-infrared light are beneficial. Learn how wavelengths interact with tissue, what happens when photons are absorbed by cells, how photobiomodulation influences cellular signalling and recovery, and why the biphasic dose response means more light is not always better.
Learn how to actually dose photobiomodulation
Understand irradiance, joules, J/cm², treatment time, wavelength, distance, tissue depth, coverage area, pulse versus continuous delivery, and the variables that change how much usable light reaches the target tissue. You’ll learn how to evaluate a device and build a treatment rather than relying on one generic protocol for every animal.
Turn the science into practical animal treatments
Learn how to assess the animal, identify the tissue you’re trying to influence, select an appropriate device and treatment approach, and build protocols for muscles, joints, tendons, ligaments, fascia, neurological applications, recovery, wounds and more. Applications extend across equine, canine, feline and other animal care settings.
About the course
Photobiomodulation can look deceptively simple: place a red light device over an area, turn it on, and wait. But effective photobiomodulation involves much more than that. The wavelength being delivered matters. The amount of energy reaching the tissue matters. Tissue depth, anatomy, coat, placement, irradiance, treatment time, distance, device type and treatment frequency all influence the exposure an animal ultimately receives. And because photobiomodulation follows a biphasic dose response, increasing treatment time or energy does not automatically create a better therapeutic response. This certification was developed to teach students how to understand those variables rather than memorize a collection of protocols. You’ll begin with the foundations of photobiomodulation and light science before moving into wavelengths, tissue optics, cellular mechanisms, mitochondrial interaction, cellular signalling and therapeutic response. From there, you’ll learn the practical side of PBM: devices, irradiance, energy and dosage calculations, treatment intervals, tissue depth, application technique, safety and contraindications, assessment, treatment planning and protocol development. The program then brings those concepts into real animal applications, including musculoskeletal, neurological, recovery and targeted treatment strategies, as well as the use of pads, wraps, handheld devices and therapeutic lasers. By the end of the program, the goal isn’t for you to simply know where to put a red light. It’s for you to be able to look at an animal, consider the target tissue and therapeutic goal, understand the device in your hands, and make an educated decision about how, why and how much light to deliver. This is photobiomodulation education designed for students who want to understand the modality at a professional level and apply it responsibly in the real world.
